I had to postpone my escape a few months because of this vacation my mother had planned with a number of the "friends". I wasn't going to miss out on 10 days in Kauai, so I held my tongue until we returned. My last meeting was in Kauai, Sunday talk/Wt. My plan was to leave my Bible, Watchtower and Songbook there, but some little dogooder girl saw me leave them at the seat and brought them to me as we were leaving the hall. Last meeting. And as every little boring ritual passed. I would think to myself last time for this, last time for that. I was quite happy at that meeting. Shoshana

I felt like I was watching a favorite movie as I was reading on. I would love to get to know you even as friends. You seem so very cool and very much together. There is a 3 day JW Singles event this Labor Day, at the end of August in San Diego. You and your friends have to come. Please send me your E-mail address and I will forward you the info. It is being organized by two sisters and I know it will be a blast. There will be friends from Canada and different parts of the US."............. Depending on what I get back, I may share this with the board. Does anyone want the details? Shoshana

Do You Kick Yourself For Going To Meetings When You Were Sick or During....
by minimus ininclement weather ?
i remember having to wait until just about the last minute to call my bookstudy to tell them whether or not a meeting was being held or not.
and these poor people hoping to enjoy a legitimate meeting off would be told by the elders whether they were expected to go or not.

Yeah, yeah, I know, but not my mom. She always thought people thought more of her than they did. I realized pretty early on it was out of sight, out of mind, until time sheets were due. Shoshana

My dad makes the most mouth watering meat loaf I've ever had. For some reason, I've really been into meat loaf these last few months. I'm sure this thread has nothing to do with the fact that I should be studying for my Criminal Procedure final on Monday. Shoshana

One spring the whole house came down with a yucky flu that wiped us out for a week. We were never missers, and certainly my mom was there every meeting with at least one of us kids. Well, after we were out for the second book study, someone finally called to see what had happened to us, and my mom was so pissed it took 'em that long to miss us, she kept us home for a month. I loved that month. Shoshana

Marriage Problem
by voxel ini am a "worldly" person, not of any religion and am soon to be marrying a long-term disfellowshipped jehovahs witness.
she has not been of the religion for over a decades time and seemingly her immediate family has accepted this through the years.
we've traveled across country together so she could introduce her family to me and have not had any problems.

It sounds like her family sought advice from their "elders" about attending her wedding, and were made to feel guilty for their contact with their wayward daughter. They truly believe that the shunning tactic will work. The good news is that this is not about you, not about your beloved, but about their religion. They have not set up a them or you ultimatum, but the ultimatum that they will shun her unless she returns to their religion. This has nothing to do with you. If she is truly the girl for you, and you can live with the idea that she may never have a close relationship with her birth family, and she can live with it, then there should be no worries. It will be much easier to settle holiday issues, because you won't have to fight with in-laws as to who you should be with this year. Hopefully you have a family that will accept her as their own daughter, and fill the void that her family is allowing their religion to create for her. Time may bridge the distance, but in this religion it rarely does. Mazel Tov Shoshana

Filing for Divorce
by iiz2cool ini got married while i was a jw and have been married for 16 years.
the last 10 years have been totally loveless, and we have merely existed under the same roof, nothing more.
now that i've disassociated myself we have nothing in common at all.

Please, please, please consult a divorce specialist attorney. Actually, consult the five best (divorce sharks) ones that are recommended in your area and pay the consultation fee. That way you knock them off your soon-to-be-ex-wife's list of possible representation, since to represent her would be conflict of interest (see I've learned something in my first year of law school). Every jurisdiction has its own laws concerning marital property, and if protecting your rights to that is important, then you must act first, and soon. From everything I have heard, whomever moves out of the marital home first is always at a slight disadvantage, so you may have to set up camp in a spare bedroom or on the couch. This is gonna suck, so hang in there, and stay strong, happy and healthy. Shoshana

What Was The Nicest / Worst Thing That's Happened To You as a JW?
by minimus infor me, (at the time), being appointed at the age of 24 was my biggest happiness.....the worst thing was leaving my first congregation because certain people wanted me out.......were there any particular highs and lows that you will never forget about being a witness?

I have been wracking my memories for the "best thing" and I honestly can't think of a thing. I experienced no random kindness that was especially for me, or my family. No memories of "just feeling the happiest ever" at any JW function or event. The worst is an easy one. I was 15, at a district convention at the Oakland Coliseum-which was unusual becuase for many years before and ever since that summer, the district conventions in the Bay Area have been at the Cow Palace. I was wearing a sundress, that left a modest amount of my shoulders and the top of my back exposed. In the final crush to exit the torturous environment on Sunday afternoon, this old lady whom I didn't know lost her balance and put her hand on my shoulder. Nothing wrong with that, I'm happy to keep the moth ball mavens from falling on me, crushing me, and soiling my sundress. However, she exclaimed how soft my skin was, so that everyone behind me noticed. Then she started stroking my back, and so did everyone within reach. It was probably only four or five people but to me it seemed like the hands of hundreds were reaching out and trying to grab me. I totally freaked out and I vaguely remember someone grabbing my arms before I punched the woman that started it in the face. The woman was mortified with herself when she realized what she had done, but that didn't help me. I experienced my first panic attack that day, and still have difficulty reamining calm in crowded environments like concerts, baseball games, and soemtimes even the pep rallies at the high school where I work. I don't remember how I got to the car, or where my mom was during all this.

I am so angry!(venting)
by Sadie5 inyesterday i received not one but two water bills.
i immediately called city hall to question why we were getting two bills.
the clerk said it was because we were using water from a meter that had been inactive.

In general the city run agencies respond most to threats to go to a city council meeting where you will tell the council during public comment (do you have that in your state?-pubic comment and open meeting laws) Just what your complaint is. I used to regularly attend school board meetings and the parents that got what they wanedt from the administrators did just that. They wrote up a little speech WITHOUT the offending individual's name in it, but also brought a written copy of their complaint with the name of the employee they wanted rag about, that the the city manager (or his clerk) will take off your hands. If it is the clerk, everyone in the town hall will hear about who was complained about at the council meeting. Don't forget to mention that you are a voter, they represent you, and that you are in the power to vote them out. People who are in cutomer service (even if they have a monopoly) shouldn't have the right to lie about actions taken jsut to shut people up. I hate the whole ater thing myself. My next door neighbors use five times the amount of water as I do and their bill is only ten percent more. Shoshana
